I was originally scheduled to photograph this subject (a high school senior picked for the Chicago Tribune’s All-Academic team) during an interview with a writer. As photographers and writers both know (hopefully), this is never an ideal situation. It should only happen if you’re completely down to the wire on time and it’s you’re only shot. I decided, along with my photo editor, that shooting him doing something active would obviously make a better picture. We decided to take some shots at water polo practice. When I arrived, the featured student pulled me aside and said he was going to ask a member of the female water polo team to prom….while clutching a dozen roses on the high dive. The whole thing happened fairly quickly so I ran across the pool to get a quick shot of the proposal. This is the picture that ended up in the paper.
