Marriage Equality

Art Johnston, 69, left, and his partner Jose “Pepe” Pena, 69, have been together for 39 years. The two, who opened the bar Sidetrack in Boystown 30 years ago, still can’t legally get married. Recently, some journalists have asked if taking a stand on marriage equality comprises journalist integrity. I think not supporting two people’s human rights is not something anyone can ignore.

Condo fire

While shooting a portrait at an art gallery this week, a 2-11 fire was called in at a high-rise condo across the street. When I walked out the scene looked ominous as smoke blanketed the downtown Chicago Street.

Ice Warehouse

Christina and her dancers

While I was home for the holidays, I took a portrait of my sister-in-law, Christina Wiginton, who recently opened a second location for her dance studio in Georgia. She and her female business partners built CK Danceworks from the ground up and have become an extremely successful business. I am always impressed by entrepreneurs and love that this is a female-run business. This photo is taken with a few of her best students.

how do you shoot fireworks?

I photographed fireworks for the first time this past July 4th. I knew I would only have a 15-minute window to get a shot in time for our deadline, so I made sure to figure out my settings beforehand. After conferring with my Tribune colleague Scott Strazzante, and researching on the Internet, I decided on a base setting: ISO 100, f/8 at 1-2 seconds. You could also experiment with the bulb setting since each firework has a different start-to-finish explosion time. The focus should be set almost at infinity and make sure you use a tripod.

The picture at left is shot at f/9 at 1 second, followed by a frame shot at f/8 at 1.6 seconds and lastly a frame shot at f/8 at 2 seconds.
